Day 4 at the 2014 Little League World Series (LLWS); results, scores, schedule

Sunday, August 17, 2014 was the fourth day of games at the Little League World Series (LLWS) in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania; four games were played and none of the teams had lost a game yet during this series. All of the games are shown live on ESPN, ESPN 2, and ABC and each game can be viewed on the ESPN website at any time.

Sunday afternoon, Las Vegas, Nevada defeated the Chicago, Illinois team 13-2 in just four innings. Las Vegas made four home runs that brought in 11 runs. Sunday afternoon, Brad Stone made the first grand slam at this LLWS as the crowd cheered him on. For more on this story, click here.

This is the 75th annual Little League Baseball World Series and each year the LLWS games are played in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The annual LLWS event brings tens of thousands of families, fans, and players from around the world to watch 10 day of games. Eight winning teams played their second game on Sunday. Here are the scores for Sunday’s games, according to the Little League website:

  • South Korea 8, Puerto Rico 5
  • Illinois 2, Nevada 13
  • Mexico 5, Japan 9
  • Pennsylvania 7, Texas 6

In an unbelievable last minute win, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania team came from behind to win the game in the last three minutes of the game. The crowd (mostly Pennsylvania fans) could be heard cheering immediately as the game came to a quick close. At the bottom of the sixth inning, Pennsylvania was down by one run, with two outs and pulled out two runs in just a few minutes. Texas will now move on to an elimination game tomorrow, while Pennsylvania will play their next game on Wednesday.

The biggest story so far this season at the LLWS is Mo’Ne Davis, a 13-year-old girl who threw a shut out game at the Little League World Series for the first time ever; Mo’Ne pitches for the Philadelphia Little League team and their first LLWS game ended in a 4-0 score against Nashville. The LLWS games can be dramatic, heart breaking, or an absolute joy for the winning teams. Making it to Williamsport is a hard earned dream for most of the 11 – 12 year olds (and 13-year-olds whose birthday is after May 1, 2014), and most of the players are astute baseball fans.

Monday, five more games will be played at the 2014 LLWS, and they are all elimination games. Here is the schedule for Monday, August 18, 2014:

  • Czech Republic vs. South Dakota – 11 a.m. (Eastern time)
  • Mexico vs. Australia – 1 p.m.
  • Texas vs. Washington – 3 p.m.
  • Venezuela vs. Puerto Rico - 6 p.m.
  • Illinois vs. Rhode Island – 8 p.m.

Each year, the LLWS starts with sixteen teams; eight United States (US) and eight international teams. It’s double elimination and each team gets to play three games at the LLWS with the final game being a consolation game. The final championship game will consist of one US team and one International team, and that game will be played on August 24, 2014.

Even when a team loses at the LLWS games, they are able to return to their suite-like surroundings at The Grove and they get to live like rock stars for about ten days. Amenities include: a large swimming pool, video games, a room full of ping pong tables, and new friends who have come from all over the world. No parents allowed!
