Day 37 Lenten Scripture and Meditation: John 15:1-8

The true vine - John 15
The true vine - John 15

Scripture Reading: John 15:1-4 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

John 15 is known as "the true vine chapter." Jesus explains in details how He is the true vine, and His Father is the vinedresser who takes care of the vine. Jesus does not beat around the bush when He says every branch in Him that does not bear fruit, He will take away. However, every branch connected to Him and is bearing fruit will be pruned. You might wonder why prune a branch that is already bearing fruit. That's because we should never be satisfied with remaining the same. We should grow and develop, and we do so by being pruned to bear more fruit.

Scripture Reading John 15:5-8 - “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

The branches connected to the true vine will also be pruned to grow healthier when it is pruned again to bear much fruit to glorify God.

The branches that bear no fruit at all will be thrown away and withered. Then they will be gathered up, thrown into the fire and burned.

Based on John 15:1-8, the Christian has four choices:

  1. Abide in Jesus and bear fruit.
  2. Abide in Jesus and bear more fruit.
  3. Abide in Jesus and bear much fruit.
  4. Abide in Jesus but bear no fruit. This will result in being thrown away and burned in the fire.

Are you bearing fruit? Are you bearing more fruit? Are you bearing much fruit? Or are you bearing no fruit?
