Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:8-9
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourself, it is the gift of God; not by works, so that no one can boast."
Did you know that 7 out of 10 Christians believe their good works will get them into heaven? And if that's the ratio among Christians, the ratio among non-Christians is probably much higher.
It is good to follow the rules and to dot every "i" and cross every "t." It is good to help people, to pay tithes and to sing in the choir. It is good to be a Sunday school teacher and to usher at the doors of the church. It is good to honor your father and your mother. It is good to sit on the same pew during every worship service. Yes, all these things are good, but doing these things does not guarantee you a place in heaven.
After you are saved, you will have a love in your heart to do the things mentioned above. However, those things will not save your soul.
This is what it takes to be saved:
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved." (Romans 10:9-10)
If we could get to heaven by our good works, then we would have something to boast about. There is only one way to get to heaven. And that way is by God's grace through His Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore, no boasting is allowed!
Reflect on your own salvation as you journey to the cross during this Lenten season.
You are invited to read the Lenten reflection for Day 24.
