Day 161/365: John Mellencamp Pop Singer

In an effort to express how the music of John Mellencamp touches our everyday lives, a display of one picture and one lyric, will be posted every day as part of a year-long project. Images and thoughts to ponder. This is picture # 161.

Pop Singer from Big Daddy

Never wanted to be no pop singer
Never wanted to write no pop songs
Never had no weird hair to get my songs over
Never wanted to hang out after the show

Pop singer
Pop songs

Never wanted to have my picture taken
Now, who would want to look into these eyes
Just want to make it real - good, bad or indifferent
That's the way that I live and that's the way that I'll die,

As a pop singer
Of pop songs

The word music is largely derived from the word mousa, the Greek word for muse. It can also be defined as organized sound, a language conveying moods, emotions, and thoughts, sometimes as a subjective experience, defined by the listener’s experience, and a social construct, wherein it is defined by whatever boundaries given to the sound, or lack thereof, by its listener. It can be so many different things to so many people. The cry of a newborn. Laughter after a river of tears that seemed to have no end. That slow and steady exhale of breath wrapped in the arms of a hug. A first hello or a final goodbye. Light coming out of the dark. Waves crashing on the ocean shore. For those who cannot hear, a series of images, something beautiful that simply takes their breath away. When random words fall into place, giving meaning, understanding, and feeling to those who listen or read. The word yes. The word no. The words I love you or I’m sorry. What defines music is as unique and endless as those who listen, and those who create.

But the one thing it can never be is a lie. It always speaks a truth.

Written and created by all that is real, a song reflects what the muse sees. We listen and we feel.

We hope.

We question.

We discover.

We live.

We grow.

We laugh.

We cry.

We make love.

We see each other.

And we see ourselves.

We reach out.

We love.

We hate.

We forgive.

We understand.

We give.

We take.

We hold on.

We let go.

We are…

And perhaps the greatest gift of music, we are never, ever alone.
