San Diego and Orange County Teams Dominate in Qualifiers to Advance to Main Draw at the Second Stop of the 2013 AVP Tour
Manhattan Beach, Calif. (Aug. 23, 2013) – The Manhattan Beach Open, second stop of the 2013 AVP Tour, kicked off Day One with unexpected upsets from the elimination of top seeded teams in both the Men’s and Women’s rounds. The highest ranked teams included Orange County’s No. 2 seeded team on the men’s side -- Huntington Beach residents Matthew Hilling and Tom Kohler, and San Diego’s No. 4 women’s team Kaui Salzman and Amanda Wiggins, both advancing into the Main Draw. In addition, Cal State Long Beach alumni and No. 29 ranked Crabb brothers, Taylor and Trevor won all three matches on Friday to secure a spot in tomorrow’s Main Draw against No.1 seeded Olympic team, Phil Dalhausser (Ventura, Calif.) and Redondo Beach native Sean Rosenthal.
As one of the most prestigious stops on tour, fierce competition on the women’s side meant just two of the top eight seeds advanced to the main draw on Saturday. On the men’s side, four of the top eight teams will move on to the money rounds.
Teams went head-to-head in effort to secure their spot in the Main Draw against the top-seeded teams which include Olympians and AVP stars Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Todd Rogers, as well as Ryan Doherty, Casey Patterson, and two-time Manhattan Beach Open champs Whitney Pavlik and John Hyden. Both Pavlik and Hyden will play with different partners this year in attempt to earn their third consecutive plaque on the Volleyball Walk of Fame. The series will continue tomorrow with the Men’s and Women’s Main Draw beginning at 9 a.m.
