We all know Dawn Richard as the sweet, golden haired girl that auditioned for "Making the Band" with P. Diddy back in 2005. Once becoming a member of girl group "Danity Kane" we traveled with her on screen when she went back to New Orleans where her Mom's dance studio once stood, and her home once was before being displaced by Katrina. We were with her when she met "Q" (Qwanell Mosely) also from "Making the Band" boy group "Day 26" and they developed a relationship.
If you can't remember her Making the Band days you'll definitely remember the edgy, soul/pop/electonica/r&b/hiphop group "Diddy Dirty Money" that formed in 2009 after the break up of Danity Kane. Richard in my opinion was always the most hard working out of the group when it came to Danity Kane, and wanting to be successful, and that hard work didn't stop once the group was dismantled. She continued working with Bad Boy Records by writing for Cassie and even P. Diddy at times. Once becoming a member of Dirty Money she dropped the sweet girl persona and embraced her more edgy side as the sexiest and most fashionable member of the Diddy, Dawn, Kalenna Harper trio known as Diddy/Dirty Money and she became the first ex-member of Danity Kane to release professional music under a major label. (I always knew she'd be the most successful...) Aubrey O'day was a train wreck, I liked D. Woods but she was selfish and you can't be selfish when in a group situation, and I honestly can barely remember the rest of them so obviously they didn't make an impression. I'm just sayin...
Since dropping her first mixtape in 2011 "Prelude to a Tell Tale Heart" and her first solo (critically acclaimed #1) EP in 2012 appropriately named "Armor On", she has developed a name for herself as a solo artist. “No label. No budget. No features and we managed to go #1 which is rare in today’s R&B climate,” says Richard. “There were five people involved in making this album happen. We are taking the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ motto to a whole other level and it’s exciting. Goldenheart will be no different. The ‘hearts’ [fans] are speaking in numbers. This is our time.” And "their time" is just in time for the release of her first LP "GoldenHeart" (said to be the first of a trilogy of albums: "GoldenHeart", "BlackHeart", and "RedemptionHeart") a story of love, loss and redemption. With the progressive sound of this new album it is sure to reach #1 just as it's predecessor "Armor On" did. The majority of this LP "GoldenHeart" was produced by Grammy nominated producer/songwriter Andrew "Druski" Scott who says this album "Golden Heart" will be a "life changing album" Scott goes on to say “It’s exciting that we are changing the mold of R&B, how it sounds, how it looks and how it is distributed. You don’t see this kind of movement in Urban music, especially on the Independent level. She’s done it once, I know she’ll do it again.”.
It's pretty clear that she is no longer just Dawn from Danity Kane or Dawn from Diddy/Dirty Money. She is DAWN ANGELIQUE' RICHARD, American singer/songwriter. If you don't know... now you know.
