'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' is No. 1 at U.S. box office

20th Century Fox's action flick "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" was the No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending July 13, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on July 13, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had $73 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending July 13, 2014.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" (directed by Matt Reeves) stars Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, Keri Russell and Jason Clarke. The movie is a sequel to the 2011 reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is one of the rare sequels that has gotten better reviews than its predecessor.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" also did better at the box office in its opening weekend than "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which had $54.8 million in its opening weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending July 13, 2014:

1. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" — $73 million

2. Transformers: Age of Extinction — $16.5 million

3. "Tammy" — $12.9 million

4. "22 Jump Street" — $6.7 million

5. "How to Train Your Dragon 2" — $5.9 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on July 11, 2014:

  • "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" — $401,000 from 101 theaters
  • "Boyhood" — $359,000 from five theaters
  • "Land Ho!" — $37,800 from four theaters
