Dawn Drake's Zapolte at Henry Hudson Riverfront Park

Last Saturday night, August 21st was the third in a series of evening concerts being held in the City of Hudson. The opening band included Rich Hellenbeck on Guitar and Syd Collins on drums. That band did excellent covers of Bob Marley songs and the lead singer had an excellent voice and played acoustic guitar. The band scheduled for the evening was Paprika but Dawn Drake's Zapolte was put in its place. Some of the members were from Paprika and the latin jazz like music seemed similar. The band consisted of a pianist, trumpeter, saxaphonist, bassist and drummer. The weather was excellent and there was a reasonable gathering of people for the event. As always the Freeport Powerboat Association had their own musical event taking place next door at the same time but Zapolte musical event was not hindered by this. The only other distraction was the occasional passing train as the station is right next to the park.

Apparently Zapolte is some sort of fruit with a pink inside that makes an excellent shake. The band itself was an excellent mix of talents and they appeared to be extremely tight for the complicated music they played. This spoke well the time they likely put into their works. Their Ipod download cards were available for their latest album for five dollars with CDs going for ten dollars. Each member seemed extremely accomplished with their particular talent and together they made some easy listening danceable music. The bassist, Dawn Drake, who is also the vocalist and the saxaphonist were very charismatic entertainers who engage the audience and add to the live performance.

Zapolte played from about seven forty pm till about nine pm with one ten minute break.  The City of Hudson, TSL and Musica had excellent lighting and sound set up on a stage in front of the parks gazebo. Linda Mussal of TSL was the master of ceremonies which she always does well. There is a vendor set up as well under a tent which makes getting good food convienient for these events.

It had been a laid back evening but after the show ended there was alot of activity one of the warehouses near the train station. Numerous State and City Police vehicles raced to the building along with the City Fire Department. There was a cone like barn fire blazing with a number of people standing near it. The people were shouting but nothing organized was apparent. The Fire Department quickly extinguished the blaze. It was an odd ending to what had otherwise been a very peaceful evening.
