How many times would you get up in front of hundreds of people who have the ability to "cheer" or “boo” you off a stage with no clear chance of victory? David Tauler did it eight times at the legendary Apollo Theater.
Born to American and Chilean parents, Tauler is no stranger to the stage. He started his musical journey at the tender age of nine years old playing the flute. Knowing his musical abilities would garner a scholarship to Dematha High School, a prominent school in the Washington DC area, Tauler's mother pushed him to play an instrument. Her plans worked and Tauler received a scholarship playing the saxophone. He later achieved the same success at University of Maryland with another full scholarship.
Tauler’s musical gifts have expanded far past the flute and saxophone and now with his skills and willingness to learn, he can play over 28 instruments including a new instrument called an ewi (electronic wind instrument – resembling a clarinet and a keyboard in one). Tauler has also expanded his talents to singing and has formed a musical group called the David Tauler Music Group.
Tauler took his group on the road to the Apollo for the first time in 2009, when he was invited to the semi-final round due to a cancellation. He seized the opportunity and never looked back. Over the next two years, he would make a total of eight appearances. His most recent trip resulted in a misinterpretation by the judges with an early exit followed by a complete crowd uproar over the incorrect interpretation of their approval for Tauler’s performance.
When asked about his Apollo adventures, Tauler responds, “You are a nobody. You have to be humble and honor the legends. If you can ever look back and laugh at something, you might as well laugh now.”
For now, Tauler has decided to retire from appearing at the Apollo Theater. He believes that God will elevate him to where he needs to be without the Apollo victory. Not to mention, most of the celebrities who have performed at the Apollo never won on that stage but instead gained renowned status on the national and international stage. Hopefully this tradition will be the same for David Tauler and his group. Only time will tell - well that and little faith and hard work too. David Tauler possesses both.
