David Robinson rookie card buyback autographs highlight return of NBA Hoops

1989 was a landmark year for basketball trading cards thanks to David Robinson.  Even though Robinson was drafted first overall in 1987, the San Antonio Spurs had to wait two whole years before he would actually play in the NBA because of his commitment to the U.S. Navy.  Similarly, collectors had to wait two years before they could find Robinson on cardboard, but when he did make his debut in 1989-90 NBA Hoops, it was historic. It's easy to write off the Robinson card today because a scrub autograph card has more "value," but people forget that the card was highly desired thanks to Robinson's play, bringing the Spurs from out of the NBA's basement to one of the league's premiere franchises.

So when Panini brought back the NBA Hoops brand, it only made sense to dig into the brand's past and bring back Robinson is some form.  And what better way than to buy back actual Robinson cards from 1989-99 Hoops (not really breaking the bank there) and have The Admiral sign the cards?  Robinson was more than happy to oblige, signing ten Hoops cards with a different Bible verse for each card as an inscription.

Expect there to be plenty of nostalgia for these cards and the value of them to be a lot more than what you might normally expect to pay for a Robinson autograph nowadays.

As part of my continued service to the community, each day we will feature a different image gallery that highlights some of the finest cards that the industry has to offer.  It might be from sports or even comic books or possibly movies or it might be something out of the ordinary and maybe even borderline absurd.  But what matters is that people get to know about these cards and get interested in the hobby like I am.  We'll be back soon for another gallery, but check out our other Card of the Day features with Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Blake Griffin.

Juan can remember a trading card gone by the same way wine connoisseurs can recall an exquisite vintage; it's all in the smell. Either that or he just looks at the back of the card for the copyright print. Juan also moonlights as the Classic Game Examiner and be sure to check out his Twitter...
