Buckhorn (AL) principal Todd Markham will recommend O'Connor to be the next Buckhorn head football coach to the Madison County Board of Education when O'Connor gets clearance from the Alabama state board of education.
The holdup for O'Connor and Buckhorn is he doesn't have an Alabama teaching certificate.
He has filled out the necessary paperwork and should be able to take the appropriate teacher test and maybe even the Praxis test if necessary.
"I've known about how good of a coach David is since we coached against each other in middle school girls basketball," Markham said.
O'Connor previously worked in Alabama at Huntsville Lee high school before coming to Giles County in 2006.
Buckhorn high school located in New Market, Alabama is coming off back-to-back 3-7 seasons which cost Chris Hancock his job.
OConnor will be the third head coach in four years for the Bucks who compete in 6A, the highest classification in Alabama.
O'Connor won immediately at Giles County and turned around a downtrodden program as he compiled a 75-17 record in seven years at the helm.
Before O'Connor came in 2006, the last winning record for Giles County was in 1999 and the Bobcats had a very unimpressive 17-44 record from 2000 to 2005.
In 2009, the Bobcats with current Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace at the controls beat Greeneville for the Class 4A state championship.
Under O'Connor the Bobcats made three 4A Semifinal appearances (2009, 2011 and 2012) including a 13-1 record this season.
The Bobcats won 10 or more games under O'Connor five times in his tenure in Pulaski.
O'Connor has tried to leave Pulaski before even accepting the Lincoln County job after legendary coach Louis Thompson retired only to return to Giles County a week later in 2010.
OConnor was suspended two weeks in 2012 by Giles County for violating the TSSAA recruiting rule but the Bobcats didnt miss a beat during his absence and their only loss of the season came in the 4A Semifinal round to eventual state champion Fulton.
