David Letterman welcomes back Barbara Walters to 'The View'

For the first time ever, David Letterman appeared on The View to welcome back Barbara Walters. During the premiere show of season 14, Letterman and Walters compared their heart surgeries and discussed how their lives have changed since their life-threatening health scares.

Barbara Walters started The View by exclaiming, “I’m fine!” She also thanked her fans and co-stars for their support throughout her health ordeal. David Letterman was the first guest of season 14 and he and Walters compared notes about their serious operations. Barbara Walters explained that her own heart surgery was to replace a heart valve, whereas Letterman underwent heart surgery to repair blocked arteries. “You just blew out a valve. You could have gone to Tune-Up Masters,” Letterman joked. Walters also stated that in both cases, their chests were sawed open and their hearts were placed on a heart-lung machine. David Letterman replied, “They can do miracles. Amazing things are accomplished.” Walters said that she now has a pig valve in place, which caused Letterman to quip, “I have other pig parts in me.”

Barbara Walters and David Letterman both seem truly appreciative of their new leases on life. “It’s more than a miracle,” Letterman told Walters. He also said that his son is the biggest blessing in his life since his heart surgery nearly a decade ago. “Your life doesn’t really begin until you have kids,” he added about son Harry. Letterman also expressed that he would like to have more children.

Barbara Walters discussed her own recovery and explained that she was up and walking the streets of New York City less than three weeks after her surgery. Throughout the interview, Walters and Letterman were completely comfortable with each other on The View. “We have a special relationship that’s lasted years and years,” Walters told viewers. Letterman, a big fan of Walters also expressed gratitude to her by simply stating, “Thank you for all your support for me and my son over the years.”

The new season of The View began today on ABC. Barbara Walters told viewers that she would further detail her heart surgery on tomorrow’s show.
