Over six months after a cheating scandal broke involving staffers who worked on his show, David Letterman is finally speaking publicly about his personal life and relationship with Regina Lasko. Of course, he chose a pretty safe venue in "Live with Regis and Kelly" (as Regis Philbin is a longtime friend of his), but he was still frank and open about his attempts to repair his marriage:
"If you behave recklessly and it hurts your family, well then of course, it hurts you. And there's just one thing you can do in that circumstance. ... You take a look at the explosion and it knocks you down, and you wake up every morning and you're scared and you're depressed and sad and you've kind of got to let that knock you down, and then pretty soon, you've got to starting knocking it down.
"And then when that happens, you're able to take a look at the pieces of your life, because you think an explosion has taken place and you're looking at the shards, and you say, 'Well can we put this back together?' And by God, maybe you can put it back together. And maybe it won't be the same, but maybe it'll be different, maybe it can even be better in a different way.
"And you can only do that … with the help of your friends. … I've had nothing but great friendship to help me through this, and so right now, that's what we're doing. We're putting the thing back together to see what it's going to look like and, is it viable? Is it something that can be satisfying and fulfilling? So, there you go."
The man who forced Letterman into revealing his affairs (which occurred before his marriage to Lasko but still during their relationship) -- pleaded guilty back in March to attempted grand larceny. Dave is notoriously private about his life away from "The Late Show," but public curiosity on his marriage has led to him occasionally sharing a few details.
Do you think Letterman still has a long road ahead of him, and should Regina ever forgive him? Feel free to share your thoughts below.
