CBS Corporation’s CEO Leslie Moonves said there is only one Dave, and CBS is extremely proud that he will continue to call CBS his home. In response, Letterman said that he and Les had a lengthy discussion, and – in Letterman’s joking style, he said - they both agreed that he needed a little more time to fully run the show into the ground. Previously this year, Letterman told Oprah in an interview that he has an agreement with Moonves and she will tell him when it’s time for him to leave CBS.
Letterman’s present contract ends in 2014, just as his competitor on NBC, Jay Leno. Leno’s contract was cut short as the “Tonight” show on NBC is being handed over to Jimmy Fallon – in spite of the fact that Leno still has the top-rated show for the evening slot he has now against Letterman.
Letterman has been the late night talk show host for a record-setting 31 years.
