No one will confuse Barry Trotz with Michael Jordan, ever. But late in Friday night’s game with the visiting New Jersey Devils, David Legwand made the only NHL coach he and the Nashville Predators have ever had catch a little air.
Trailing the Devils 2-1 late in the third, Trotz pulled goaltender Carter Hutton for an extra attacker. With 10.8 seconds left on the clock, the puck deflected to Legwand on the right side, where he buried a shot into the largely open New Jersey net to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The players on the ice at the time of the goal celebrated with each other.
The players on the bench celebrated there with their arms raised.
Just behind those players was Trotz, who showed his emotion with a couple of quick celebratory jumps up in the air with his arms raised as well.
“Yeah, I think I got about three or four inches up there,” Trotz said with a laugh following the game, which was won by the Predators on an overtime goal by Shea Weber.
Twitter friend Jeff Adams pointed us to a link of the bench boss’ celebration. It can be found here.
“I didn’t see the bench, I just know we were excited,” Legwand said. “Points are so crucial at this point in the season.”
Next week will be the 22nd anniversary of the release of then young rap duo Kriss Kross’ hit single “Jump.”
In it they say, “The Mac Dad will make you jump, jump.
“Daddy Mac will make you jump, jump.
“Kriss Kross will make you jump, jump.”
And even if it is just for one night in 2014, and even if it just pertains to Trotz, we will add this lyric.
David Legwand will make you jump, jump.
But three or four inches Trotzy? We aren't sure the soles of his shoes left the bench, but who is counting?
