Veteran BBC TV and radio emcee David Jacobs, who hosted the Beatles on “Juke Box Jury” back in 1963 and was seen on numerous other shows on the network through the years, has died at age 87, the BBC reported Sept. 2. Jacobs had stepped down from BBC Radio 2 in July citing ill health in dealing with liver cancer and Parkinson's Disease.
He had been with the BBC since 1945, hosting shows such as “Housewives' Choice,” “Pick of the Pops” and “Any Questions,” as well as “Juke Box Jury.” Most recently, he had hosted “The David Jacobs Collection,” a weekly program of his musical choices.
“Juke Box Jury” premiered on BBC television on June 1, 1959 and lasted until 1990. The idea was for panelists to rate new records. The Beatles appeared as a group on Dec. 7, 1963. (See a ticket from the show here.)
Beatles manager Brian Epstein appeared twice by himself. George Harrison and Ringo Starr (separately on July 25, 1964 and Aug. 1, 1964) and John Lennon (June 22, 1963) also appeared. Lennon made a point of not saying anything positive about any of the records, including Elvis Presley's “(You're the) Devil In Disguise.”
The five Rolling Stones appeared on July 4, 1964. Keith Richards later wrote, "We didn't give a s---.... We just trashed every record they played."'
Others who appeared on the show, according to IMDB.com, were Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Adam Faith, Jane Asher, Cliff Richard, David McCallum, Helen Shapiro, Dave Clark, Judy Carne, Annette Funicello, Funicello, Buddy Greco, Jimmy Savile and Lulu.
