It’s career achievement day for conservative journalist and commentator David Frum, a conservative commentator who is bolstering his professional resume by joining Newsweek to write features and the website, the Daily Beast where he'll write a blog.
A question many are asking is: Will Frum be able to hang on to this job?
Consider his track record, which can be characterized as: Speak your mind and lose your job. A former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, Frum was an early and strong supporter of the Iraq War. However, following the end of the Bush administration the National Review fired Frum for writing strongly worded articles questioning the wisdom of the Republican party.
Last year Frum lost another job for criticizing the ineptitude of the Republican party for its failure to take any action to reform the health care system.
It’s usually not a good idea to criticize a former employer. However, Frum has appeared smarter each day by pointing his finger at the failings of the Republican strategy.
Presumably Newsweek and the Daily Beast will be more receptive of Frum’s ideological wanderings and rhetorical flourishes than the conservative think tank, the American Enterprise Institute which fired him.
In making the move, Frum shut down operations of his own site, FrumForum.
