Baytown angler, David Elmore Jr., decided he didn’t have anything else to do on July 6, so why not go fishing. He’s a special Education teacher at Baytown Sterling High School. It wouldn’t be too much longer and school would be starting again. Better take what fishing chances he had and head to the water.
“I walked in (wading) right about daylight, about 5:45 a.m. I think,” recalls Elmore. He was keying on slicks and working bait. He fishes this same location, somewhere in East Bay, on a regular basis.
“I hadn’t caught very much,” continued Elmore. He was throwing a topwater lure. The trout kept jumping over the lure; they weren’t serious about hitting the bait. The best fish caught so far was a 17 inch fish on Pumpkin Seed/chartreuse Bass Assassin.
He carries two rods with him when he is wade fishing. One rod is rigged with a soft plastic and a topwater on the other rod.
“The wind just died,” continued Elmore. “I just kept casting and casting. Nothing was biting. As I was standing there, I said, ‘Lord, I just need a little breeze, please.’ It was becoming really hot.” Evidently the Lord heard his request because about that time a breeze came up, not a heavy wind, but just enough to ripple the surface of the water. Besides providing a little relief from the growing heat, the rippled water surface is an ideal time to use a topwater.
“I reached over and grabbed the other rod that had the topwater bait tied on.” He caught the CCA STAR division leading trout on a chrome Zara Spook Jr. “On my third cast the big trout blew up on it. It didn’t take long to land her. I think she lost all her energy when she struck the lure, and on that first initial run. That was it.
“I thought it was a redfish at first. She turned around and came toward me, walking me in circles. She came up and I saw it was a pretty nice trout.”
At first glance Elmore estimated the trout measured somewhere between 28-30 inches long. The official scales at GYB Bait & Tackle verified the trout at 9 lbs, 3 ozs, and measured 29 inches long.
