Philadelphia native David Cohen will present an evening of classical and traditional music from around the world on original instruments Saturday August 6, 2011 at the Tin Angel 20 S. 2nd Street in Philadelphia. David will open for the CD release celebration performance from Afferent Cue.
David's study of the classical guitar started after hearing the music of Joan Armatrading and somebody likening her guitar style to that of a classical guitarist. Over his 30 plus years of study David has gone on to other unique musical styles such as flamenco guitar, classical Chinese music performed on the pipa, classical Turkish music performed on the oud and the study of the Great Highland Bagpipes. Also thrown in the mix of music is jazz and blues.
The August 6th performance will feature music on the aforementioned instruments and will also feature David as a composer of music for the classical guitar. David will perform four original pieces that will be part of his upcoming CD release.
David teaches in both Philadelphia and Ocean Grove, New Jersey where he serves as the President of the Ocean Grove Area Chamber of Commerce. Along with his devotion to small business communities David has also founded the Ocean Grove Benefit Concert for the Monmouth & Ocean Counties Food Bank that is held on the last Saturday in January at the Ocean Grove Youth Temple. Also realizing the need to promote the Philadelphia classical music scene David started the website Philadelphia Classical Music.com in 2004. This past year brought David the opportunity to interview his guitar hero Joan Armatrading along with playright and author Ntozake Shange.
David has been featured in the Broad Street Review, Crossover with Jill Pasternak on WRTI, The Asbury Park Press, The Montgomery County Ticket, G-Radio in Neptune NJ and pictured in Life.com with 2010 Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchiti as he played his bagpipes for Franchiti's victory lap through New York(David was also mentioned in the New York Times Automotive Section reviewing the event).
Along with his full time work as a musician David is entering his senior year of study at Temple University's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. When asked what he wants to do with his dergee when he graduates David replies, "I haven't deceided yet what I want to do when I grow up". While he might be undecided about his future career after graduation he holds fast that music is always the primary factor in his life. He is very grateful to Afferent Cue for taking a chance on having his instrumentation as their opening act.
