Former teen idol David Cassidy, 63, has been sentenced to 3 months in rehab and five years of probation after pleading no contest to a DUI charge stemming from this past January, when he was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer for making an illegal right turn near LAX. At the time his blood alcohol level was found to be twice the legal limit at .19. It was his 2nd DUI arrest in 6 months, and 3rd since 2011.
In addition to spending time in rehab, Cassidy must also take part in a 9 month alcohol education program, and pay fines. He was aso sentenced to 5-years probabtion according to his lawyer Steven Graff Levine, who added that “David is committed to his sobriety and wants to break the cycle that got him arrested again.”
According to his manager, Jo Ann Geffen, Cassidy had been in Los Angeles to attend depositions by Sony Pictures TV regarding a lawsuit he filed against the company in 2011 regarding claims that he was “long overdue for money owed him for the sale of “Patridge Family” merchandise and home videos, etc.” She blamed his “brief” relapse on pressure from the hearings.
Levine says Cassidy has been in rehab and will remain for longer than his sentence requires. He says Cassidy is committed to his sobriety and wants to break the cycle that got him arrested for drunken driving twice in less than six months.
Born April 12, 1950, David is the son of the late actor Jack Cassidy and Evelyn Ward, as well as the stepson of actress/singer Shirely Jones, with whom he co-starred on the 1970’s popular TV show “The Partridge Family,.” As Keith Partridge, oldest son of 5 singing siblings. It was that role that helped launched him as a major (solo) recording artist playing sold-out concerts worldwide. In fact his 5 solo albums reportedly sold more than 1 million copies each.
In addition, Cassidy has appeared on Broadway, as well as guest spots on numerous other TV Shows from “Marcus Welby MD” to “Malcolm In The Middle,” “Ironside” to “Fantasy Island,” and an episode of CSI Crime Scene Investigation last year. A younger generation may also recognize him from a stint on “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2011.
Cassidy’s third wife, Sue Shrifrin filed for divorce several months ago after 12 years of marriage.
