David Brenner

Stand-up comedy legend David Brenner will be performing at Zanies in Saint Charles this Friday and Saturday.

Brenner's career has spanned more than four decades as the 77-year-old is still going strong by touring the country and doing what he loves most and does best -- making people laugh. A response he gave to a reporter early in his career still holds true to this day: "I want to make as many people laugh, as heartily as they can, as long as I can."

David began doing stand-up in the late 1960's after serving in the army and attending Temple University with a degree in mass communication. Having a natural knack for making people laugh, his popularity in the comedy club scene skyrocketed and by 1971 he was already making his first of many Tonight Show appearances. Brenner holds the record for the number of guest appearances on The Tonight Show at 158. He has even guest-hosted the show 70 times.

Brenner's leap into television was short-lived. In 1976 he starred in a tv show called Snip that was picked up by NBC but was abruptly cancelled just before it was scheduled to air. The show did go on in Australia, but was cancelled after 7 episodes.

Brenner did have success in cable television. He has produced and starred in four stand-up specials for HBO. His last one, David Brenner Back With A Vengeance, was aired live and was one of HBO's highest rated specials.

In recent years, David Brenner the comedian has become David Brenner the political pundit. He has made several appearances CNN, MSNBC, and Fox -- not to win laughs, but to debate political issues.

Showtimes for this weekend are Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 7:30 and 9:45pm. Zanies is located in the Pheasant Run Resort on 4051 East Main St. in Saint Charles. For more information, call 630-584-6342 or visit www.stcharles.zanies.com.
