Musical chameleon David Bowie hasn’t graced the world with a new album since 2003’s Reality, but on January 8, his 66th birthday, Bowie announced his 26th studio album Next Day will be released on March 12 in the U.S., March 8 in Australia, and March 11 in other countries.
“Where Are We Now?,” the first single from Next Day, already has a music video (in a typical arty style) available to watch on Youtube, and it is already available for purchase on iTunes. Pre-orders on iTunes for the whole album have already started, and fans can choose between the regular album or the deluxe edition including three bonus tracks.
“Where Are We Now?” producer Tony Visconti has already produced several of Bowie’s albums, notably Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold the World, Young Americans, and Low. In an interview for BBC News, he remarked that the first single “links up the past with the future”, and The Next Day is reflective of both “classic Bowie” and “innovative Bowie.”
As for whether or not tour dates will follow, Earl Slick, longtime guitarist for David Bowie, admitted even he doesn’t actually know. “Obviously we want him to, but right now, that’s a big if.” At least it’s not a “no.”
