Mother’s Day Sunday 2014 marks the final day for David Bates, the current exhibit at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Nasher Sculpture Center. The museums’ first collaborative effort presents a retrospective exhibit of the work of David Bates.

The artist, a Dallas native and Southern Methodist University graduate, has painted and sculpted provocative artworks for over 40 years. Today the Modern features approximately 45 of his oil paintings which capture haunting scenes that range from the Texas Gulf Coast to the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

"David Bates's exuberant paintings, sculptures, and reliefs are memorable and treasured works in the Modern's permanent collection. His masterful technique creates an unforgettable portrait of a particular place and its inhabitants. He translates his own experiences into works of art that transcend regional boundaries."—Dr. Marla Price, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth Director

The artist’s influences include fishing, his parents, and the works of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. His rich color palette and human figures with boxy, block shoulders and torsos are showcased at the Nasher in a vast collection of sculptures, paintings, and drawings.

"Following in the footsteps of the great painter-sculptors Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, David's work in sculpture has expanded his expressive range and had a profound impact on his work in other media.”—Jeremy Strick, Nasher Sculpture Center Director

David Bates is on exhibit at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Nasher Sculpture Center through May 11, 2014. For more information visit www.themodern.org and nashersculpturecenter.org.
