Sixteen Candles
Universal Pictures

Films often help mold some of the best pick up lines or advice. In the previous article, we looked at the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High and examined Damone's 5 point plan to dating. Let us look at yet another classic film that offers some pick up lines that may help even the clumsiest of suitors.

In the film Sixteen Candles, we learn that it is okay to reach for someone who is slightly out of your league. High school is always a little tricky when trying to pursue a potentional love interest because of the lingering embarrassment that could occur. When the freshman geek (Anthony Michael Hall) attempts to hit on Samantha (Molly Ringwald), the sophomore girl of his dreams, it does not go so well, but you have to admire his persistence (See clip).

Well, it started off okay, he actually went along with one of Damone's tips by not just walking up to her, but by moving, smoothly across the floor. So, where did he go wrong? First off, she is in a bad mood and clearly not interested in talking to anyone. Then, he is invading her personal space, which is enough to make most people uncomfortable, but he also sniffs her. On the positive side, he attempts to pick up a girl with complete confidence. Then, he continues trying to engage her even though she brushes him off. When all is said and done, he takes the rejection with a grain of salt and does not let it destroy his ego. So, the best lesson from this is to take a chance and if it does not work out, don't let it get you down.
