Barely eight weeks ago, the Houston Dash were nothing more ten the NWSL's first expansion team announcement. Now the a roster is in place, a coach as been named, a scheduled has been released and on Friday, February 7, 2014, the uniforms were unveiled.
Nine players from the team modeled the training kit, the away jersey and the home jersey sponsored by BBVA Compass Bank before a standing room only crowd in the President's Club at BBVA Compass Stadium as head coach Randy Waldrum introduced them.
Following Friday's unveiling, the floor was opened for a Q&A with the audience. Chris Canetti, Dash team president, fielded two of the toughest questions of the night. How did the Dash get their name and why the Dash did not have thier own website.
Canetti responded; "We picked the name on our own and to be honest with you, we wanted the brand Dash to resemble the Dynamo. Believe it or not dash is a synonym for Dynamo, so if you look that up in your thesaurus hopefully you'll find it cause I did. So dash energy, speed, motion means the same as the Dynamo so H-D so we felt it created a unique name and therefore we selected it."
As for the Dash website, Canetti had this to say; "Currently, all the domains are taken so we thought this was the best route (tab on www.houstondynamo.com). We will see what happens in the future."
Saturday continued the weekend of Dash celebration as long lines of the Houston faithful gathered outside of BBVA Stadium for Meet The Dash Day. The three hour festivity included a Q&A with the players, an autograph session and limited team memorabilia for sale as well as season tickets.
Brittany Bock, the team's first overall selection in the expansion draft, told the crowd of the team's excitement over the facilities and field at BBVA.
"It's great.I'm shocked what they've been able to do. It brings me back to when I first came out of college and played at the Home Depot Center. It's awesome here and we get to play on grass."
The Dash open play on Saturday, April 12, 2014 in a 7:30p.m. tilt against the 2013 NWSL Champion Portland Thorns FC.
