Last week I came across an article I wrote about Darwin's in Marietta back in 2010, when it was under different management and before it was renovated. It was still in the same location, though, and I mentioned in the article that the place had a ghost. Before I got a chance to visit, the club closed and did not open back up until 2011. Since then, as you know, it has become one of my favorite Atlanta area blues clubs. But I forgot all about the ghost!
For a paranormal investigator like me, with a book about ghosts in Marietta (Haunted Marietta), a ghost is a very desirable addition, and a ghost in a blues club I love is just irresistible. So when my husband Ken and I went to the Saturday afternoon jam with Katie Martin last weekend, I asked Lindsay, the bartender and partner in ownership, if they still had the ghost.
Liindsay gave a big smile. "Mr. Larry!" she said. She has not had experience with him herself, but at least one other staff member has encountered him more than once. Liindsay explained that the club used to be a house, and Mr. Larry was one of the original inhabitants of the house, they think. After that it was a drive-through bait and tackle shop, and then it was Kelly's. Mr. Larry made himself pretty well-known when it was Kelly's, but he still comes around, it seems. Lindsay says that there are photos that show an unexplained black mass. I am skeptical of photos that could be paranormal, but that is interesting, nonetheless.
That's really awesome. Great live blues, friendly staff, delicious food, and a ghost. It just doesn't get any better than that!
