Man robs banks in Darth Vader costume (police photo)
Times must be tough for the Empire, a man dressed as Darth Vader robbed a Long Island bank yesterday at gunpoint and left with an illegal withdrawal.
According to the New York Daily News, the Star Wars Sith Lord marched into a Chase Manhattan in Setauket, N.Y., wearing a Vader helmet, a blue cape, and camouflage pants. No word yet if his theme music was playing from the banks sound system.
Chase has turned into an empire itself since taking over so many collapsed banks. Here in Chicago, they took over the giant Washington Mutual, as well as many mid-sized failed banks. Perhaps Vader is threatened by Chase's ambition.
He didn't use his lightsaber, like most earth bound bank robbers, he struck with a gun. He waved it around and demanded cash from the teller. One customer thought it was a prank and started talking to Lord Vader and the thief threw him to the ground. "The customer thought it might have been a joke, and not a serious attempt at a robbery," said Suffolk County police Detective Sgt. William Lamb.
He was not harmed in the robbery nor was anyone else and it is unknown how much money Vader took. "The fake Darth made a quick-footed getaway, and the bank was still checking its drawers late yesterday to figure out how large his take was," Sgt. Lamb said
While it is common for thieves to wear a mask to hide their identity, it is believed to be the first robbery by someone in Star Wars costume. Perhaps police can use this video to recreate his entrance!
