Star Wars made its way onto social media yesterday, Monday, Dec 2, by posting a Darth Vader selfie on Instagram. The photo was the popular Sci-Fi series' first on Instagram, and has received over 26k likes as of today, Dec 3.
While Star Wars has been active on other social media sites, such as Facebook, the Vader selfie is an interesting break from their traditional advertising campaigns. And a successful one as well, as their Instagram account (@starwars) has now reached over 90,000 followers in just a day.
If you are unsure as to what a "selfie" is, it's a popular term referred to people who use their phones to take pictures of themselves in mirrors. In fact, it was Oxford Dictionary's 2013 "Word of the Year". And it's become so widely used and popular, that self-proclaimed "selfie professionals" are offering up tips for Vader's next selfie. Such as turning the camera around and better optimizing his use of hashtags.
Although, the suggestion by professionals that he cannot use a smart phone while wearing gloves is not entirely true. I own a quality pair of gloves made for iPhone use, and many exist on the market. Plus, with the Empire's advanced technology, it's not out of the realm of possibility to assume Vader crafted a pair of heat-sensitive hand wear.
With new Star Wars movies coming in the future, it's possible (highly probable) that the Darth Vader selfie is just a first step in a long line of upcoming viral marketing campaigns. It will be interesting to see what the PR Department over at the Death Star comes up with next.
Maybe the Jedis should take a look at posting some #Yodaisms.
