Middleweight, Darren Barker (26-1, 16 KOs) defeated Daniel Geale (29-2, 15 KOs) last night, claiming the IBF middleweight title in Atlantic City. The bout was televised on HBO Boxing After Dark.
From the start of the first bell, both fighters came out punching, wasting no time to prove their point. The action was briefly halted in round-4 as Geale landed a low blow on Barker.
It was almost over for Barker in round-6, when Geale threw a hard right to the head of Barker, followed by a devastating left to the liver. Barker dropped in apparent pain, but managed to beat the count.
In true Barker fashion, the torn and hurt Barker would dig deep and dominate the remaining rounds, despite having to fight Geale with a nasty cut over his left eye that opened up in round-10.
In the end, Judge Carlos Ortiz scored the bout 113-114, Judge Barbara Perez scored it as 111-116, and Jude Alan Rubenstein had a score of 114-113, giving Barker the win by split decision.
