Darrell Hammond talks mental illness: 'one time I left SNL in a straight jacket'

SNL alum Darrell Hammond appeared on the Howard Stern Show Tuesday morning, opening up about his violent childhood, his crack addiction and the time he was removed from a Saturday Night Live rehearsal in a straight jacket.

Hammond revealed that he was repeatedly physically tortured by his mother as a child, having his hand slammed in car doors, his fingers stuck into electrical sockets and his tongue methodically sliced with a steak knife. He also told the Howard Stern Show audience that he was once struggling with crack addiction and self-cutting so profoundly that he was removed from an SNL rehearsal in a straight jacket and taken to the clinic inside 30 Rockefeller Center.

"One time I left the show in a straight jacket…It was during a rehearsal. The rehearsal was on the 8th floor and the clinic was on the 7th floor, and they took me to the clinic I guess I was so disoriented—and didn’t recognize people in the room.”

Hammond, the longest running cast member in SNL history, also revealed that in spite of his desire to please Lorne Michaels, he couldn't bring himself to do an impression of Senator John McCain because he related so closely to his torture experiences. Hammond is best known for his impressions of President Bill Clinton and Reverend Jesse Jackson.

Hammond says he's currently clean and sober and seeing a psychiatrist twice a week. He has written about his trauma and recovery in a new memoir called: 'God, If You're Not Up There, I'm F***ed'. Buy it on Amazon here
