Darkness Within revealed their inner gloomy side at Sunshine Studios Live, on Oct. 12. They were the opening acts alongside Maddy Hershiser, The Widowhood Effect and Pain Machine. Street Corner Gypsy was the main support and Kofi Baker’s Cream Experience was the headlining act.
Mark Chowning is the vocalist, Chico Struck is the drummer, James Gallardo and Todd Pennington are the guitarists and Sheldon Roberts is the bassist of Darkness Within. Struck also provides backup vocals.
Roberts kicked off Darkness Within’s performance by mimicking the sounds of heartbeats, at the start of “Dispair”. Soon after, his band mates accompanied him and Struck provided backup vocals. As the song came to an end, Roberts brought back the mimicked heartbeats and brought the song to an end.
Prior to “Crazy Hero Man”, Struck had a bit of fun with his microphone and wished everyone a good morning. Then, Chowning acknowledged the other musicians on the bill with Darkness Within. He went onto greet the audience and encouraged the crowd to make some noise. As they continued with the song, Gallardo and Pennington shredded the guitars and it provided the more dominant sounds.
Before the start of “Blind”—Chowning thanked the spectators, stated Darkness Within had a music video out for the song and how it could be seen on YouTube. Pennington soon let his guitar sound off, as he opened with an instrumental. The instrumentals intensified during the choruses and simmered during the verses. As the song continued–Gallardo, Pennington and Roberts stood by each other, as Chowning remained front and center.
As “Darkness Within” was about to get underway, Chowning announced the song was the type to move around to. He encouraged everyone to move their hands from side-to-side. Afterwards, he announced Darkness Within would be returning to the venue and mentioned they would be back in early and late Nov. He stated the song was the type in which they could hold their lighters up and waved their hands in the air. During the song, Gallardo had a solo and Struck sang backup vocals.
“Ashes and Blood” was the last song of Darkness Within’s recital. Chowning stood atop of Struck’s platform, before providing the vocals. Roberts went onto stand behind Gallardo, as they rocked back and forth. In the end, they thanked the venue and introduced themselves one last time.
“Man Unkind” was also a part of Darkness Within’s set.
