Darkness Before the Dawn benefit

Kali’s Fire dance troupe invites you to celebrate the Vernal Equinox on Friday, March 21, 2014, the last night before the dawn of spring. The historical Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio was selected as the venue for this unique dance show. Proceeds of this event benefit the Preservation Society at the Reformatory.

The chateauesque Reformatory (www.ohiostatereformatory.org), made famous in the film Shawshank Redemption, was constructed in 1886 and housed over 155,000 male prisoners before it was closed on December 31, 1990. It’s now a popular tourist attraction.

Join some of Northeast Ohio’s interesting Middle Eastern dancers for an evening full of hauntingly beautiful dance. The approximately two-hour family-friendly show will feature “dark themed” performances, fitting for such a haunted site. In addition to the show, there will be a 50/50 raffle, vendors and the Reformatory’s gift shop, museum and concession stand will be open. Fraley Memory Productions will be doing mini-portrait sessions, as well as photographing and recording the show. The photographs and DVD’s will be for sale with a portion going to the Preservation Society. For those inclined, there will also be a two-hour Ghost Walk.

Tickets for the show are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the show at 7:00 p.m. The Ghost Walk is an additional $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
A combined ticked for both the show and Ghost Walk is available for $22 in advance or $27 at the door.

The Ghost Walk is not open to the public or to those who do not purchase a benefit admission ticket. Participants must be at least 12 years of age with a parent or guardian present. It is suggested that participants dress in layers, as part of the building may be quite cold. Bring a flashlight and a camera.

“Join us for an evening ghost walk through the dark halls and corridors of the historic Ohio State Reformatory. You will be taken on a two-hour guided tour to the hot spots where reports have been made about paranormal activity. Hear about what people have experienced and the stories of murder and death that cause many to believe that the prison is haunted. Who knows, you might just have your own experience.”

Kali’s Fire is known for its philanthropy. Just recently, it’s sister troupe,Tribal Fire hosted the annual Spirit in Motion benefit for Akron Children’s Hospital, raising $2,046.62. They also hosted the One Billion Rising Hafla, benefiting the Akron battered Women’s Shelter with $865.
