A new photo for Warner Bros. “Dark Shadows,” has been released online Feb 13. The image features yet another look at Johnny Depp as the vampire Barnabas Collins, this time joined by Eva Green, who plays the witch Angelique Bouchard.
Fans of the 1960s gothic soap opera upon which Tim Burton’s movie is based will recognize the importance of the two characters. Without getting into details, let’s just say that Barnabas owes his existence to his complicated relationship with Angelique.
Meanwhile, “Dark Shadows” and Depp fans who have been paying close attention to the various images can see another, slightly more restrained look for Depp’s Barnabas Collins. Much of the fun in this photo, though, is in the smoldering looks that Depp and Green exchange, noticeable even in the still.

So, what do such “Dark Shadows” photos suggest about the tone of the film, especially in light of the original TV show?
Director Tim Burton has previously called the tone “weird seriousness.” Helena Bonham Carter, one of the movie’s stars and Burton’s wife, has described the movie as “very original” and “kind of uncategorizable,” before saying it is “a soap opera, but it’s very, very subtle.”
Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, whose own novel and screenplay “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” is being made into a movie, also addressed the tone of “Dark Shadows” while promoting the former at the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois on Feb. 10.
"The tone of the movie is soap operatic," Grahame-Smith told Badass Digest. "It's heightened. Everything is heightened and grand. Johnny just dug in and big. [Starts hamming it up.] 'Didn't you see? How... could you? My god, woman!'
"There's an absurdist element to it. It's very funny. I don't think people are expecting it to be as funny as it is."
“Dark Shadows” also stars Bella Heathcote, Michelle Pfeiffer, Gulliver McGrath, Ray Shirley Jackie Earle Haley; Jonny Lee Miller and Chloe Grace Moretz.
With a release date of May 11, “Dark Shadows” isn’t the only upcoming vampire movie. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I” coming to Blu-ray and DVD, and “Underworld: Awakening” is still in movie theaters. But vampires fans looking for some new undead can also see “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” when it opens June 22. Of course, in that film, audiences will probably root for the president.
Pittsburgh movie-goers will be able to see “Dark Shadows” at the AMC Loews Waterfront 22, SouthSide Works Cinema and Waterworks Cinema 10. Look for locations and movie tickets available for online purchase at Fandango.
