Angélique decides that Sarah holds the key to manipulating Barnabas and steals one of the girl's dolls as a talisman. Barnabas finds himself unable to hate Josette, in spite of her apparent betrayal.

Sarah suddenly becomes deeply ill and Angélique offers to use her powers to cure the girl, but only if Barnabas marries her. She allows Sarah to recover and is triumphant in her plan to ensnare Barnabas.
