Dark Fantasy or sometimes referred to as Gothic Fiction is a literary subgenre which combines elements of Fantasy with those of Horror.Evocative of feelings of fright and forebodingness creating an atmosphere of melancholy as well as a sense of dread.Stories of the supernatural dealing with thee occult or an overwhelming fear of thee unknown.Sometimes featuring an antihero or monster as the main character often of chaotic evil alignment with questionable morality and motivations.
Horror author Charles L. Grant and writer of the Fantasy series "Kane" Karl Edward Wagner have both been considered to have first coined the term.Gertrude Barrow Bennet has also been referred to as "the woman who invented Dark Fantasy."Which has been described by Grant as "a type of Horror story in which humanity is threatened by forces beyond human understanding."
Can be Fantasy based or Horror based, encompassing various works of literature, movies, as well as art etc.
