Today, March 12, is the fourth day that President Obama has closed the White House to visitors due to sequestration cuts. Yesterday, mega-billionaire Donald Trump announced that he would fund the tours if the president would allow. Tours are conducted by a volunteer staff and it only takes about a hundred thousand dollars a year to operate.
Trump offers to pay for White House tour operations
Newt Gingrich first suggested that any millionaire or billionaire could easily fund the tours allowing people to visit the home of presidents. Stating that President Obama is merely the current tenant of the White House and should not close it to the public, the former speaker said that those whom Obama wants to tax most, like Donald Trump, would happily pay for the services of volunteers to enable the tours. Trump said he would be more than happy to do exactly that, provided the president did not attempt to gouge him for more than the actual cost of touring operations.
