The Captain Nathaniel Mills Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will host a “New Member Orientation” class Saturday, Feb. 15. The orientation will be held at the Haltom City Library, 4809, Haltom Rd., Haltom City, 76117, from 11 a.m-1 p.m.

The orientation topics will be DAR terminology, protocol, insignia, GRS/supplementals, committees, state conference, Continental Congress, and more. The presenters will be Lorna Rankin, Julie Avedikian, and Sharon Katz.

This class is intended for anyone new to DAR or who may have joined within the last year or two who may have questions about DAR. It will be a high-level overview of a variety of topics to try to get the new member assimilated into the chapter and into DAR so that their DAR experience is more meaningful.

The Captain Nathaniel Mills chapter has been steadily growing for the last few years. In January 2011 there were 71 members. That grew to 77 one year later and then increased again to 81 in January 2013.

Since then there has been rapid growth with the count at 104 at the November 2013 meeting, with four more members becoming effective December 2013.

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.

Eligibility for membership is open to any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.
