People were stunned Wednesday to learn of the Danvers murder, right on the heels of a school shooting in Nevada. Though there are many details yet to be revealed, ABC News shared the latest available information on Oct. 23.
Colleen Ritzer, 24, was allegedly assaulted and killed by 14-year-old student Philip D. Chism Tuesday. He appeared in court Wednesday and is being charged as an adult in the murder. Chism will be held without bail. The probable cause hearing is set for Nov. 22.
What was the motive behind the Danvers murder? Authorities aren't disclosing anything regarding Chism's alleged motive at this point. It is believed that he killed the popular math teacher in the school's bathroom Tuesday, then moved her body via a recycling bin and dumped her in the woods. Surveillance cameras caught that aspect of the crime.
Ritzer's body was discovered Tuesday night, and Chism had been reported missing that night. Authorities found him in a nearby community. Philip Chism is said to be a recent transfer student and a junior varsity soccer player. Students are saying he seemed to be a nice kid and they never saw anything like this coming. Ritzer has been described as being an “amazing teacher.”
The community in Massachusetts is clearly devastated by the shocking tragedy. All schools in the district were closed Wednesday as authorities worked on the Danvers murder case.
Correction: Some earlier reports had indicated Ritzer had been stabbed, but few details have been released by authorities. Current reports indicate she was assaulted by Chism, and the details above have been edited to reflect that.
