Minnesota reserve forward Dante Cunningham was charged with a felony assault, on April 4, after being accused of choking his girlfriend during an argument.

The criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court Cunningham’s girlfriend, who remains unnamed, told police they had been having relationship problems and got into an argument early Thursday at his suburban Minneapolis home.

She told police Cunningham grabbed her around the neck and slammed her against the wall, choking for 15 to 20 seconds during which she could not breathe. The complaint states after Cunningham dropped her and left the home, she called 911.

Cunningham returned while police were present and was arrested. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 7, according to the Hennepin County attorney’s office.

Cunningham did not travel with the Timberwolves to Florida this weekend, as he was jailed until Friday evening when bail was set at $40,000. Minnesota (38-37) defeated Miami (52-23) in a double-overtime thriller (122-121), after Corey Brewer converted one-of-two free throws with 1.8 seconds left.

Kevin Love scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Minnesota, which got 24 from Chase Budinger, 15 from Gorgui Deng and 13 apiece from J.J. Barea and Ricky Rubio.

Cunningham, who has played a key role off Rick Adelman’s bench this season, has appeared in 74 contests and averages 6.0 points and 4.0 rebounds. He will also miss the team’s April 5 game at Orlando (21-55).
