Danrad Knowles named Rookie of the Week by American Athletic Conference

Houston Cougar forward Danrad “Chicken” Knowles was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending January 19, 2014.

The 6-10, red shirt freshman from Houston, Texas got his first start for the Cougars on Sunday, January 19, 2014 against Rutgers.

He scored 16 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line.

In addition, he was 1-of-2 from three-point range and pulled down eight rebounds; seven of them on defense.

Knowles averaged 11 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in the two games during the week of January 13-19, 2014.

He tallied six points and five rebounds in the Cougars’ loss to Louisville on January 16, 2014.

For the season, Knowles has played in 16 games and started in one for a total of 326 minutes.

He is shooting 50-of-100 (.500) from the field while connecting on 5-of-13 (.385) from three-point range.

From the free throw line, he is shooting 68.1% (32-of-47) and has pulled down 86 rebounds; 61 on defense and 25 on offense; averaging 5.4 rebounds a game.

In addition, he is averaging 8.6 points a game for the Cougars.

In his last game against Rutgers, he was asked in the post-game press conference how he felt about his first start as a Cougar. He responded:

“It was nervous. I shot an air ball on the first shot. I got it out of my system early so that was good for the rest of the game.”

In addition to Knowles’ honor, junior forward TaShawn Thomas was named to the conference’s weekly honor roll.

Thomas averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two games against Louisville and Rutgers.
