Danland; a peak into the life of Porno Dan

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a porn star? Porn stars lead a sexually charged life on camera, but what happens after the camera turns off? Who are these people and what are their lives like?

'Danland,' a documentary that premiered at this years Slamdance Film Festival, follows 'Porno Dan' on his road to the AVN's, his quest for love and his fleeting desire to leave the industry. 'Danland' is Alexandra Berger's documentary film debut.

Berger was introduced to the world of 'Porno Dan' by a friend, ‘I had a friend who moved to D.C. and he just felt invisible. So, to make a connection he joined a group for black men who fulfilled women’s fantasies of having multiple partners at once.’ Dan Leal (Porno Dan) invited the group to use his basement and to film their encounters. The group agreed to be filmed, but only while wearing masks.

Berger says she is attracted to 'those on the fringe of society' and initially thought the film would focus on these men having anonymous sex while wearing masks but an interview with Dan changed the focus. Dan is an amateur pornographer that handles his business, his entire business including filming and starring in most of his films, out of his home.

Despite his chosen profession, Dan yearns for his very own happily-ever-after. Berger and her crew tailed Dan for more than three years following many of his relationships as they grew, and as some people leave his life forever. Right from the moment we meet Dan it is obvious that he is lonely and desperate for a personal connection that he does not know how to create. As we are shown from the opening of the film, he finds a wife, but who meets him at the altar? Is it his longtime love that he has been pinning for or another? Of the wedding, Berger said, 'I had no idea it would work out the way it did.'
