Danish Parliamentary Speaker Thor Pedersen has accused politicians of taking scientific climate change theory as fact.
This is nothing new, every government at one time or another take theory and rumour as gospel, spreading inaccurate information to the masses, whether it's climate change, the economy or winning the war on terrorism.
The public rely on their elected officials competence to do the groundwork on everyday issues in order to provide their constituents with factual and reliable information on how their country is performing, whether economically, globally or socially. Inaccuracies can foster doubt, enrage the public and make countries look incompetent on the world stage. All have a detrimental effect, especially when it comes to global decision making in world affairs.
If politicians and governments rely on theory, then their competence as an elected official is no better than the man on the street who can postulate just as easily. Citizens must insist elected officials who make decisions that affect us be competent in their chosen ministerial portfolios, thus avoiding scandal and embarrassment.
Theory, taken as fact, equates to either fear mongering or good news, who is to lose when governments without thought pass judgment? The loser is the public and the world economies who rely on factual information.
Information is power, but when that information is theory, God help us all.
