For a little while, it seemed like the next big thing in sci-fi or otherwise supernatural procedural dramas was going to be to trap their characters within a small town using a physical dome. Stephen King did it; Syfy's Haven did it, and so on. But when Fringe released an episode summary for "Welcome to Westfield," announcing their own entrapment of Peter (Joshua Jackson), Olivia (Anna Torv), and Walter (John Noble), they put their own sinister twist on things.
"Welcome to Westfield" finds Walter surprisingly venturing out into the field to investigate when a plane crashes on the main road in a small town called Westfield. Around the same time, every car on the road failed. Walter suspects a major pocket of electro-magnefication was in play, but after visiting a small diner where the proprietor appears stuck in a time loop and then attacks him with no warning, the case gets much more complicated.
Don't worry, though; Walter has seen this kind of thing before-- in Brigadoon (you have to love this show's references!)-- so he is on the case! And what he finds is much more than a little electro-magnetic activity; it's a physical anomaly. And though it was caused by one man carrying out an experiment, it is still bigger than anything this team knows how to take down. They'll just have to ride out the storm, so to speak, and hope they're all left standing (and with only one head each) when it's over.
But first, Walter invents a new cocktail! Did you know that cocktails were originally created as a breakfast drink? Certainly something to start a day off right, and for Walter, perhaps it was what even gave him the courage and interest in leaving his lab to take this case on. If you'd like to try Walter's concoction (which Peter thinks is too heavy on the butter but which was probably perfected before it was sent out to be shared!), we have copied the recipe below. Drinking before watching this episode may not fully be advised, though; you will need all of your faculties intact in order to follow the thread, as well as the larger implications for events sure to come.
The Hot Cinnamon Roll:
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ tsp. brown sugar
- 2 ½ oz. Cinnamon Schnapps
- 2 ½ oz. spiced rum
- 1 Tbsp. softened butter
- Pinch of Nutmeg
- Pinch of Ground Cinnamon
Instructions:
- Boil 1 ½ - 2 cups of water, preferably in an Erlenmeyer flask (Florence or Volumetric flask will also work). While heating the water, place the brown sugar, Cinnamon Schnapps, spiced rum, butter, nutmeg and cinnamon in your favorite mug (or beaker). When water is boiling, pour it through your trusty funnel into the beaker until it’s almost full. Stir to dissolve the sugar, schnapps, rum and butter. The trick is to ensure optimal heat distribution, not allowing the mixture to separate. Drink and enjoy with your fellow friends and/or labmates!
Fringe airs on FOX on Friday nights at 9pm. "Welcome to Westfield" airs on February 10th 2012.
