The first episode of the new year for Fringe is the one LA TV Insider Examiner was on set for way back in October. And now that we have seen it, we have to admit, we fully understand why the actors were having such a hard time talking about it. The truth is, it’s hard to say anything about “Back to Where You’ve Never Been” without giving too much away. But we’re going to try!
The official episode description from FOX explains that in this episode, “In an effort to find a way home, Peter (Joshua Jackson) journeys to the Other Side to confront Walternate (John Noble). However, his venture proves more dangerous than expected. Meanwhile, Olivia (Anna Torv) receives a dire premonition from an Observer.”
So keeping those things in mind, it isn’t just Peter who heads to the alternate universe. Remember when Seth Gabel teased a bromance for his Lincoln Lee and Jackson’s Peter? It appears this is where we will see some payoff. Though the two aren’t best buds, they do make quite an affective team. Sure, there are some speed bumps along the way, but Lincoln is a quick thinker and proves to be easily adaptable to situations and scenarios.

Once over on the other side, it becomes very clear that the case of the shapeshifters is only intensifying. After a young girl stumbles upon one in a restroom, it turns out that someone within the government has been taken over. We have to admit that our theory was always that Walternate was behind the shapeshifters-- in “our” world Walter was so distraught without Peter as his anchor that he went to one extreme, so we thought it was only natural that Walternate would go to another extreme, in this case extreme evil. And though we are not the only people with this theory, this episode reminds that “things are not always exactly as they seem.”
It’s Fringe, though, so really, we guess that should be a given.
As FOX already teased for you, Olivia receives a message from an Observer that stands the chance to change everything. But it’s not something we get to see her deal with throughout the episode as the message comes in the final few moments of “Back to Where You’ve Never Been,” surely setting up her “fight or flight” drive to kick in immediately in the episodes to follow.
We will find out what happened to Peter’s mother in this alternate reality, and what comes out of it is an extremely touching and telling moment between Walternate and Peter. They may not be from the same world, but somehow they may make the best fit out of all of the father-son combinations. That’s right; we said it! All of this will certainly weigh heavily on Peter going forward, too.
And though many of you ask what Walter (Noble) was eating in this episode, we have to admit that the bulk of the episode was focused on Walternate, and he’s not much of a snacker.
