According to a report Saturday on ProMMAInsider.com, Daniel Straus, a contender in Bellator's featherweight division, was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Friday night on traffic and drug charges. In all, a total of four charges were made against the fighter, including driving with a suspended license, possession of MDMA (ecstasy), possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of more than 20 grams of cannabis.
He is being held at the North Broward Bureau Detention Center in Pompano Beach, Fla., on a bond of $2,200.
Daniel Straus was scheduled to take on Pat Curran at Bellator 95 for a shot at Curran's featherweight title on April 4. However, he was forced to withdraw from that contest after suffering a broken hand. Instead, Shahbulat Shamhalaev, the Season 7 tournament winner, will contend for the title.
Straus had been on a major roll lately, winning an impressive 17 of his last 18 fights. He last lost to Patricio Freire in Bellator's Season 4 finals, but rebounded nicely to capture the Season 6 crown last year. In that tournament, he outpointed Jeremy Spoon, Mike Corey and Marlon Sandro on his way to earning a title shot as well as a $100,000 payday.
Alvin Robinson was the last victim for Daniel Straus. That was last October, and Straus beat the UFC veteran by a rear maked choke at Bellator 78.
Prior to his MMA career, Straus was a highly accomplished high school wrestler in Ohio. However, he had his share of controversy while competing. As a senior, he was ruled academically ineligible and forced to miss the second half of the season. However, he was given a wild card entry into the NHSCA Senior Nationals, and went on to win that tournament.
He made his MMA debut in 2009, getting off to a poor start by losing two of his first three contests. Rebounding nicely, he went on a tear that saw him improve his record to its current 21-4.
