Daniel Spohn came up one win short of earning a chance to compete for a six-figure UFC contract.

The Columbus, Ohio native lost to Matt Van Buren in the semi-finals by TKO in the second-round on Wednesday night’s episode of “TUF 19” on FOX Sports 1. Van Buren will compete in the live TUF 19 Finale on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Spohn earned a spot in the “TUF 19” house with a vicious first-round KO of Tyler King on the debut episode. The Aikijitsu black belt was selected by former UFC champ B.J. Penn to join his team after the victory.

After getting in the house, Spohn defeated Todd Monaghan in the quarterfinals by unanimous decision. The win set up the match against Van Buren in the semi-finals.

In the opening round against Van Buren, Spohn was able to score a takedown less than a minute into the round. Van Buren was able to eventually get back to his feet but Spohn was able to do enough on the ground and on the feet to win the round.

Spohn came out aggressive in the second round but he started to show signs of fatigue. Van Buren was able to clip Spohn a few times in a wild exchange and forced him to go for a takedown.

Van Buren was able to stuff the takedown attempt and made Spohn pay with vicious elbows to the head that opened up a cut on the side of Spohn’s head. Spohn was able to break free but was dropped by a right hand and ref Herb Dean had seen enough and stopped the fight.

Van Buren will fight Corey Anderson in the finale for a chance to earn a six-figure UFC contract. Anderson and Van Buren were both coached by Frankie Edgar on the show.
