When (500) Days of Summer made its big splash five years ago (!!!) and became the sleeper hit of 2009, it was during, appropriately enough, in the latter part of summer during blockbuster season. Bolstered by solid reviews, a charming duo of actors, and a surreal, heartfelt story of true love and heartbreak, it was an example of counter-programming at its most successful. And clearly that is the template being used for What If, a rom-com featuring starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan.
Formerly titled The F Word (which would have been preferable), the film has Radcliffe playing Wallace, a guy who meets the perfect woman in Chantry (Kazan), only to find he has drifted into the infamous "friend zone". Adam Driver, Rafe Spall, and rising star Mackenzie Davis (Breathe In) add to a cast that should be strong enough to overcome some of the familiar genre stuff going on here.
Directed by Michael Dowse, What If opens in limited release August 1st.
