Daniel Gillies casts in 'Vampire Diaries' April 25 episode 'The Originals'

TVGuide.com has confirmed that Daniel Gillies will reprise his role as Elijah in the April 25 episode of The Vampire Diaries entitled "The Originals", which will also serve as a backdoor pilot for a possible spin-off based on the vampire family.

The episode will find Klaus (Joseph Morgan) returning to New Orleans, where he reunites with his malevolent former protege Marcel -- forcing Elijah to join forces with the latter's enemies in order to keep Klaus alive in the hopes of helping him find redemption.

Gillies, who's starring in the Canadian supernatural medical drama Saving Hope, has been a Vampire Diaries fan favorite since season two.

Unlike his brothers Klaus and Kol, and sister Rebekah, Elijah has always maintain a sense of morality, honor, and compassion -- especially when it involves Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), whom he is somewhat close to.

If "The Originals" does well in the ratings, then it may be picked it up as a series for the 2013-14 season.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8pm on the CW.
