Dangers of antifreeze to dogs and how to avoid it

As a pet owner, the most important thing is to keep the home, yard and garage pet-proof and safe. Dogs are just as inquisitive as any other domestic pet and have a way to put anything and everything in its mouth. They test things they see through sniffing and taste. Unfortunately, many things around the home have a purpose for humans but can be extremely toxic to the dog, such as antifreeze. If you suspect or know that your pet did get into something inappropriate, contact your local Rockford-area veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home immediately before the problem becomes fatal.

Whether you leave antifreeze around where your dog can gain access or not, you need to be aware of any fluids that may be on the garage floor or driveway. Antifreeze has a sweet taste to pets, drawing their attention and interest. Spills on the outside flooring can be as dangerous as an open container.

It does not take much antifreeze to cause harm to your dog and can cause nervous and neurological problems, leading to kidney failure. If not treated quickly, this poisonous substance can have fatal results, usually within 4 to 8 hours.

Your dog may be disoriented and appear unstable within 30 minutes or more after ingestion, depending on how much the dog ingests. If you suspect your dog did swallow some antifreeze or other toxin, do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian or emergency clinic for immediate treatment.

It is difficult when you have children and pets to be sure the environment for them, inside and out is a safe place to live but their well-being is dependent upon your care. Since they are just curious and not sure of what is and is not good for them, it just takes a little more time and effort on your part to protect your loved ones, including that adorable and inquisitive canine companion.
