Dangerously cold weather to start the work week

A brutally cold arctic air mass will overspread the region today. Temperatures in the teens this morning will fall to 0 to 5 by late in the day. Scattered snow showers are likely and any snow that accumulates will blow around in the strong westerly winds.

Heavy lake effect snow will begin to develop this afternoon across the primary snow belt east of Cleveland. The lake effect snows will persist across the primary snow belt through Tuesday night with significant accumulations possible.

Elsewhere through Tuesday night, it will simply be cold, with a few scattered snow showers and areas of blowing snow. Temperatures will be frigid with wind chills reaching dangerously low levels.

By Wednesday, a weak storm system will approach from the west. This will help to moderate our temperatures a bit and also bring the threat of widespread snow.

Here is the forecast: For today, mostly cloudy with snow showers likely along with areas of blowing snow. Temperatures will fall to 0 to 5 by late this afternoon. Winds W 20-30 mph with higher gusts. Wind chills -10 to -20.

Tonight, partly cloudy with a chance of snow showers along with areas of blowing snow. Heavy snow possible across the primary snow belt. Lows will range from -10 to -20. Winds W 20-30 mph with higher gusts. Wind chills -30 to -45.

Tuesday, partly cloudy with a chance of snow showers along with areas of blowing snow. Heavy snow possible across the snow belt. Highs -3 to 3. Winds SW 20-30 mph with higher gusts. Wind chills -35 to -45.

Tuesday night, partly cloudy with a chance of snow showers along with areas of blowing snow. Lows around -5.

Wednesday, mostly cloudy with a chance of snow. Highs will climb to around 20.

Looking ahead: We will have a chance of snow on Thursday with highs around 30. Friday will be partly sunny with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 30s.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of rain or snow with highs around 40 degrees.
